Global research reveals countries where record-breaking heatwaves are likely to cause most harm
New research has revealed that certain countries are at a higher risk of experiencing harmful impacts from record-breaking heatwaves. The study, conducted by researchers from the University of Bristol and the University of Melbourne, analyzed the potential impacts of extreme heatwaves in 736 cities across 43 countries.
According to the study, countries that are located in the tropics and subtropics are at the highest risk of experiencing the most severe impacts from heatwaves. The researchers found that cities in South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa are particularly vulnerable.
The study also found that low-income countries, such as India and Bangladesh, are more vulnerable to the effects of heatwaves than higher-income countries. This is due to factors such as poor infrastructure, inadequate healthcare systems, and a lack of resources to prepare for and respond to extreme weather events.
The researchers used a new metric called the "Heat-Health Risks Index" to assess the potential impacts of heatwaves in different regions. The index takes into account factors such as population density, age distribution, and healthcare access, as well as the frequency and intensity of heatwaves.
According to the study, if global warming continues at its current pace, the number of people exposed to heatwaves will increase significantly in the coming decades. The researchers estimate that by 2040, over 1.2 billion people in 1,250 cities could be exposed to heatwaves that are beyond their current experience.
The findings of this study highlight the urgent need for countries to take action to prepare for and mitigate the impacts of heatwaves. This includes investing in infrastructure and healthcare systems, improving early warning systems, and implementing measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The study's lead author, Dr. Dann Mitchell from the University of Bristol, commented on the findings, stating that "our results show that if we continue with business as usual and do not take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, we can expect the number of people exposed to potentially life-threatening heatwaves to increase significantly in the coming decades."
As temperatures continue to rise due to climate change, the impacts of extreme heatwaves are likely to become more severe and widespread. It is essential that countries take action now to prepare for these impacts and protect their populations from harm.
